The health of our children is the wealth of our community

Newton we have a problem.

State and city officials are defending the use of toxic releases such as the use of herbicides on the MBTA right-of-way as a passenger safety measure and a way to maintain reliable train service.

They ignore the hazards to people, especially the damage to children and other sensitive populations.

I believe people have a right to know when our tax dollars are being used to do something ineffective, inefficient, and dangerous. The use of herbicides doesn't solve the big bad scary weed problem. Instead, it creates a pesticide treadmill, destroying the soil for hardy ground cover and invites weeds and invasive plants to grow.

Public officials should be defending public health and environmental safety and most of all the public's right to know so that residents can organize to stop the spraying.
